‘Did you get on the Internet?’ JJ asked when I returned to the shack. He was lying on his bed, open books surrounding him.

‘Nah, the big dog started attacking the little dog.’

‘Barry’s mutt always gets a hiding from that dog,’ JJ nodded. ‘Really fucks up Barry’s farmer image.’

That night we lay in our beds, the candles making the shadows tower over us. Night-time was the worst. Once the sun went down there was nothing to do but lie around thinking about all the dumb shit I’d done to end up here.

‘What will you do with your money?’ I asked JJ.

‘Don’t know. Could buy a house up here with all that.’

‘True.’ I lay there listening to JJ breathing for a while. ‘Do you really believe in ghosts?’ I asked.

‘I don’t know, there’s lots of weird stuff people can’t explain.’

‘You don’t think some people are just crazy?’ I asked.

‘There’s research that hauntings stem from trauma, which makes sense, but that doesn’t explain–’ He stopped talking.

‘Explain what?’

‘When it’s whole families,’ he said, quieter now. ‘There was one case in England, three generations in one house, they all saw the same shit.’

‘Like?’

‘Something attacked the youngest kid, smashed up all the religious icons in the house. Research shows it often begins when someone brings a cursed object into the house,’ the bunk beds squeaked as JJ shifted his weight.

‘What kind of object?’

‘Could be anything, books, clothes, jewellery. Once it’s in the house things slowly start going wrong, people get sick, go mad, die.’

‘What can you do?’ I asked, feeling my chest tighten.

‘Pass it on to someone else.’
